The search for the best observatory site in the world has lead to the discovery of what is thought to be the coldest, driest, calmest place on Earth — a place where no human is thought to have ever set foot.

To search for the perfect site to take pictures of the heavens, a U.S.-Australian research team combined data from satellites, ground stations and climate models in a study to assess the many factors that affect astronomy — cloud cover, temperature, sky-brightness, water vapor, wind speeds and atmospheric turbulence.

The researchers pinpointed a site, known simply as Ridge A, that is 13,297 feet (4,053 meters) high up on the Antarctic Plateau on the continent at the bottom of the world.

The study revealed that Ridge A has an average winter temperature of minus 94 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 70 degrees Celsius) and an extremely low amount of water in the air.
The site is also extremely calm, which means that there is very little of the atmospheric turbulence that elsewhere makes stars appear to twinkle.

"It's so calm that there's almost no wind or weather there at all," said study leader Will Saunders, of the Anglo-Australian Observatory in Australia.

All these elements combine to make the perfect recipe for an astronomical observation post: "The astronomical images taken at Ridge A should be at least three times sharper than at the best sites currently used by astronomers," Saunders said. "Because the sky there is so much darker and drier, it means that a modestly-sized telescope there would be as powerful as the largest telescopes anywhere else on earth."

The site would even be superior to the best existing observatories on high mountain tops in Hawaii and Chile, Saunders said. Researchers assert that a telescope at the site could take images nearly as good as those from the space-based Hubble telescope.

The total bill was Dirhams 75.

Each one shared & contributed Dhs. 25.

The waiter took the bill & amount to the cashier.

The cashier was happy & decided to give them Ramadan discount of Dhs. 5

Cashier asked the waiter to return them Dhs. 5.

Now the waiter was confused. How to distribute Dhs. 5 among 3 persons?

So, he kept Dhs. 2 as tips in his pocket

& gave ONE Dirham to each one of the 3 persons.

i.e. Dhs. 3 he refunded to them.

So initially each one had contributed Dhs.25.

Now as they are given 1 Dh. back,

their contribution reduces to Dhs. 24

They all contributed Dhs. 24

that is (x + y + z) 24 x 3= Dhs. 72

And Dhs. 2 are in the waiters pocket.

The total becomes Dhs. 72 + 2 = Dhs. 74

But they had paid Dhs. 75

Finally, Where is the remaining 1 DIRHAM gone?

ഓണം ONAM ( September 02, 2009 ) is the biggest festival in the Indian state of Kerala. Onam Festival falls during the Malayali month of Chingam (Aug - Sep) and marks the homecoming of legendary King Mahabali. Carnival of Onam lasts for ten days and brings out the best of Kerala culture and tradition. Intricately decorated Pookalam, ambrosial Onasadya, breathtaking Snake Boat Race and exotic Kaikottikali dance are some of the most remarkable features of Onam - the harvest festival in Kerala.

Onam is the biggest and the most important festival of the state of Kerala. It is a harvest festival and is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm all over the state by people of all communities. According to a popular legend, the festival is celebrated to welcome King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam. Onam is celebrated in the beginning of the month of Chingam, the first month of Malayalam Calendar (Kollavarsham).

This corresponds with the month of August-September according to Gregorian Calendar. Carnival of Onam lasts from four to ten days. First day, Atham and tenth day, Thiruonam are most important of all. Popularity and presentation of rich culture of the state during the carnival made Onam the National Festival of Kerala in 1961. Elaborate feasts, folk songs, elegant dances, energetic games, elephants, boats and flowers all are a part of the dynamic festival called Onam. Government of India has taken due notice of this vibrant and colorful festival. It promotes Onam internationally in a big way and celebrates 'Tourist Week' for Kerala during Onam celebrations.

Thousands of domestic and foreign tourists visit Kerala to be a part of Onam. Story goes that during the reign of mighty asura (demon) king, Mahabali, Kerala witnessed its golden era. Every body in the state was happy and prosperous and king was highly regarded by his subjects. Apart from all his virtues, Mahabali had one shortcoming. He was egoistic. This weakness in Mahabali's character was utilized by Gods to bring an end to his reign as they felt challenged by Mahabali's growing popularity.

However, for all the good deed done by Mahabali, God granted him a boon that he could annually visit his people with whom he was so attached. It is this visit of Mahabali that is celebrated as Onam every year. People make all efforts to celebrate the festival in a grand way and impress upon their dear King that they are happy and wish him well.

Onam Celebrations : Rich cultural heritage of Kerala comes out in its best form and spirit during the ten day long festival. It is indeed a treat to be a part of the grand carnival. People of Kerala make elaborate preparations to celebrate it in the best possible manner. The most impressive part of Onam celebration is the grand feast called Onasadya, prepared on Thiruonam. It is a nine course meal consisting of 11 to 13 essential dishes. Onasadya is served on banana leaves and people sit on a mat laid on the floor to have the meal.Another enchanting feature of Onam is Vallamkali, the Snake Boat Race, held on the river Pampa. It is a colourful sight to watch the decorated boat oared by hundreds of boatmen amidst chanting of songs and cheering by spectators. There is also a tradition to play games, collectively called Onakalikal, on Onam. Men go in for rigorous sports like Talappanthukali (played with ball), Ambeyyal (Archery), Kutukutu and combats called Kayyankali and Attakalam. Women indulge in cultural activities. They make intricately designed flower mats called, Pookalam in the front courtyard of house to welcome King Mahabali. Kaikotti kali and Thumbi Thullal are two graceful dances performed by women on Onam. Folk performances like Kummatti kali and Pulikali add to the zest of celebrations.

இணையத்தில் நவீன தேடல் தொழில்நுட்பத்தின் முன்னோடி யாகூ. இன்று அதே தொழில்நுட்பத்துக்காக மைக்ரோசாஃப்ட் நிறுவனத்திடம் கையேந்தியிருக்கிறது. இதற்காக கடந்த மாதம் இரு நிறுவனங்களும் ஒப்பந்தமும் செய்து கொண்டிருக்கின்றன. உண்மையில் தோல்விக்கான யாகூவின் ஒப்புதல் தான் இந்த ஒப்பந்தம். யாகூவிடம் தனித்து வெற்றி பெறுவதற்கான எந்தவொரு திட்டமும் இல்லை என்பதும் இதன்மூலம் வெளிப்படையாகியிருக்கிறது. இரு நிறுவனங்களும் ஏதோ மனமுவந்து இந்தக் கூட்டுக்கு ஒப்புக்கொண்டிருக்கின்றன என நினைத்தால் அது தவறு. இந்த நிறுவனங்களுக்கு கைகோர்ப்பதைத் தவிர வேறு வழியே இல்லை என்பதுதான் உண்மை.

கடந்த சில ஆண்டுகளாகவே கூகுளின் வளர்ச்சியை எதிர்கொள்ள முடியாத மைக்ரோசாஃப்ட், யாகூவைக் கைப்பற்றுவதில் குறியாக இருந்தது. கடந்த ஆண்டில் 44 பில்லியன் டாலர்களுக்கு ஒட்டுமொத்தமாக யாகூவை விலை பேசியது. இந்த பேரம் படியாமல் போனதால், இப்போது புதிய ஒப்பந்தம் போட்டு யாகூவை வளைத்திருக்கிறது மைக்ரோசாஃப்ட். இந்த ஒப்பந்தப்படி, யாகூ இணையதளத்தில் இயங்கிவரும் தேடும் வசதி, மைக்ரோசாஃப்டின் "பிங்' தேடுபொறியின் தொழில்நுட்ப உதவியுடன் செயல்படும். இதற்குப் பதிலாக மைக்ரோசாஃப்டின் ஆன்லைன் விளம்பரங்களைச் சந்தைப்படுத்தும் பணியை யாகூ மேற்கொள்ளும். இதற்காக 400 பேர் கொண்ட யாகூ ஊழியர் குழுவை மைக்ரோசாஃப்ட் சுவீகரித்துக் கொள்ள இருக்கிறது. யாகூ தேடுபொறி, பிங் உதவியுடன் செயல்பட்டாலும் தேடல் வருவாயில் 88 சதவீதம் யாகூவுக்கே கிடைக்கும் என்கிறது இந்த ஒப்பந்தம். 10 ஆண்டுகளுக்குச் செல்லத்தக்க இந்த ஒப்பந்தத்தின் முதல் நோக்கம், இணையத் தேடல் சந்தையில் 65 சதவீதத்தைத் தக்கவைத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் கூகுளை வீழ்த்துவதுதான் என்பதில் சந்தேகமேயில்லை.

இரண்டாவது நோக்கம், வீழ்ந்து கிடக்கும் யாகூவைச் சுதாரிக்கச் செய்வது. இதற்காக யாகூவுக்கு 4 பில்லியன் டாலர்களை மைக்ரோசாஃப்ட் நிறுவனம் கொடுத்து உதவப் போவதாகவும் பேச்சு அடிபட்டது. இதனால், ஒப்பந்தம் கையெழுத்தாவதற்குச் சற்று முன்வரை யாகூவின் பங்குகளின் மதிப்பு சரசரவென உயர்ந்தது. ஆனால், எதிர்பார்த்தபடி, நிதியுதவி எதுவும் தரப்படாததால், யாகூ பங்குகள் சரியத் தொடங்கின. அதேநாளில் மைக்ரோசாஃப்ட் பங்குகளின் விலை சற்று உயர்ந்தது. இதிலிருந்தே ஒப்பந்தம் யாருக்குச் சாதகமானது என்பதைத் தெரிந்து கொள்ளலாம். யாகூ முதலீட்டாளர்கள் இப்போது தலையில் கையை வைத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். கடந்த ஆண்டு ஒட்டுமொத்தமாக யாகூவை விற்றிருந்தால்கூட, ஒரு பங்குக்கு 33 டாலர்கள் கிடைத்திருக்கும். ஆனால், இன்று அந்த விலையில் பாதிக்கும் கீழே பங்குகளின் மதிப்பு குறைந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறது. இருந்தாலும், இந்தப் புதிய கூட்டு மூலம் தேடுபொறிச் சந்தையிலும் பங்குகளின் விலையிலும் ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட இலக்கை (அறிவிக்கப்படவில்லை) ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட காலக்கெடுவுக்குள் (இதுவும் அறிவிக்கப்படவில்லை) எட்ட முடியாவிட்டால் உறவை முறித்துக் கொள்ளலாம் என்னும் விதி ஒப்பந்தத்தில் சேர்க்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. இது யாகூவுக்கு மிகச் சாதகமானது. எதிர்பார்த்த அளவுக்கு இல்லாவிட்டாலும், சிறிய அளவில் நிதியுதவியை அளிக்க மைக்ரோசாஃப்ட் முன்வந்திருக்கிறது. இப்போதைய நிதிநெருக்கடியைச் சமாளிக்க இந்த நிதி யாகூவுக்கு உதவும். இன்னொரு பக்கம், இந்த ஒப்பந்தத்துக்குப் பின்னால் யாகூவை வீழ்த்தும் சதி இருக்கலாம் எனவும் சந்தேகிக்கப்படுகிறது. அதாவது, யாகூ இணையதளத்தில் பிங் தொழில்நுட்பத்துடன் கூடிய தேடல் வசதி அமைக்கப்பட்டாலும், மைக்ரோசாஃப்ட் நிறுவனம், தனது இணையதளங்களில் பிங் தேடும் வசதியைத் தொடர்ந்து இயக்கும். இதுபோக, தனியாக பிங் இணையதளமும் செயல்படும்.

ZAKAT - One of the 5 Pillars in ISLAM

"O.. you who believe, you shall give to charity from the provisions we have given to you, before a day comes where there is no trade, no nepotism, and no intercession. The disbelievers are the unjust." -Al Quran : 2:254

Dear Brothers & Sisters ....!

Al Hamdulillah, the month of Ramadan has been bestowed upon us by Allah. ZAKAT is one of the five fundamental pillars of Islam, mandatory on all Muslims who are of eligible wealth. Zakat is due from and payable by a person on his wealth (and not his income), which has remained with him / her for one Islamic year.

It is difficult to calculate the completion of one year on each item of wealth, because purchase dates may vary. To overcome this difficulty, a practical method is to fix a date (eg 1st of Ramadan), compute your total wealth on that date and calculate Zakat, thereon.

• Zakat on Pure Gold and Gold Jeweler

Zakat should be calculated at 2.5% of the market value as on the date of valuation (In our case we consider 1st of Ramadan). Most Ulema favor the Market Value prevailing as on the date of Calculation and not the purchase price.

• Zakat on Precious and Semi-Precious Stones

There is some contention on whether these are to be considered for valuation. In my humble opinion if they have a value, then they calculate towards your wealth, and it is on the wealth that Zakat is mandatory. One may calculate the saleable value of Items at hand on the date of Zakat Calculation.

• Zakat on Silver

Zakat is to be paid on Silver in Pure form or Jewellery, Utensils, Decorative items and all household items including crockery, cutlery made of silver at 2.5% of the prevailing market rates.

• Zakat on Cash and Bank Balances

Zakat should be paid at 2.5% on all cash balance and bank balances in your savings, current or FD accounts. The amount technically should be in the bank for one year. Usually it happens that the balance keeps on changing as per personal requirements.

You may make your best judgment and the best way is to pay on remaining amount on the day of calculation

• Zakat on Loans Given, Funds, etc.

Zakat is payable by you on loans you have given to your friends and relatives. It should be treated as Cash in Hand. You may deduct Loans Payable by you to arrive at the net present value of your wealth. Zakat is payable on all Govt. Bonds, Public Sector Bond, paid-up Insurance premiums, your paid-up portion of Provident Funds, Govt. Bills receivables, etc.

• Zakat on Land Property

Zakat is not payable on personal residential House even if you have more than one and meant for residential purpose only. Also Zakat is not applicable on Property given on rent irrespective of how many. However Zakat is payable on the rental income.

However if your intention of holding properties is to sell at a future date for a profit or as an investment, then Zakat is payable on the Market Value. Also, if your intention of holding properties changes in the current year, Ie from self use to business then you need to pay Zakat on that Property Value.

• Zakat on Business

This is for Business Persons only. No matter what business you are into, you've got to pay Zakat on all STOCK-IN-TRADE. The stock must be valued at its Landed Cost Price. If you have any bills receivable (sales given on credit) then you need to add the same towards calculations.

Deduct the Amounts due to your suppliers and deduct the loans on stock on the date of calculation. Dead Stock should be calculated on scrap value or its saleable value. Damaged stock should also be valued at its scrap value.

Be honest in the calculations, as ZAKAT is an INSURANCE on your STOCK directly from ALLAH and who better an insurer than Him.

There is no Zakat on Factory Buildings or any kind of machinery, but there is Zakat on products produced in the factory (ie finished goods value). Please refer to a competent Moulvi or a scholar who can shed more light on your specific issues.

• Zakat on Partnership Firms

Zakat can be paid EITHER by the firm OR separately by the owners. If the firm is not paying, and the partner wants to calculate his share, he should take the amount standing to his capital and loan account as per the last balance sheet. Add his estimated share of profit till the date Zakat is calculated. This can only be estimated as it is difficult to calculate the exact profit or loss between an accounting year.

• Zakat on Agricultural Product

Zakat is payable on all Agricultural produce including fruits, commercially grown flowers, vegetables and all types of grains at the harvest time itself. The passing of One year does not apply for agricultural produce. If there are two or more crops on the same land per year, then Zakat has to be paid as many times on the crop, irrespective of the time.

The formula for Zakat calculation on Agriculture is as follows:

On crops dependent purely on rain water it will be 10% of produce, On crops not irrigated through rain water but use Canal Water, Tank Water, Bore well and Open wells, the Zakat is 5% of the produce. For Crops dependent partly on Rain Water and partly on other water, the Zakat applicable would be 7.5% of produce.

• Zakat on Animals

On all grazing animals like goats, sheep, camel, cows, broiler chickens, the consensus Zakat payable is one animal / bird for every 40 animals owned. However you may wish to give cash in lieu of the animal / bird itself.

• Liabilities Deductions

If you have any pending tax payable to the Govt., As of the date of Zakat Calculation, then the same may be deducted before arriving at the net worth. If you have taken any loans from any person or institution, and if you have not already deducted the same from any of the above sections, then you can deduct your Payables over here. Please be truthful, as Zakat is a sure way of protecting ones wealth if Zakat has been paid on it regularly and fully.

FOOTNOTE: Please note that Interest in any form is Haraam and strictly prohibited in Islam. So, please stay away from taking Loans on Interests and Collection of Interests from anybody or institution.

Healthy Eating During the Month of Ramadan

The holy month of Ramadan should not be a time when we toss our healthy-eating habits out the window. After a long day of fasting, one can still enjoy delicious meals prepared with the principles of ‘good nutrition’ in mind.

Tips to avoid weight gain and stay healthy in Ramadan:

• Try to avoid breaking fast with a large meal.
• Break your fast with a fresh juice, dates and soup for example, and about an hour or two later, proceed to the main meal.
• Eat slowly and avoid losing yourself while eating with friends and family and not realizing that you are FULL.
• Avoid sugary drinks and juices or consume them in moderation.
• Don’t stop your daily activities during this month. Keep exercising, keep moving.
• Avoid the over consumption of fried foods and rich sweets which are generally served at this time.
• Don’t forget to drink plenty of water.

Common discomforts during the month of Ramadan include: Constipation, indigestion, bloating and heartburn. To avoid such problems:-

• Drink at least 1.5 litres of water from iftar until Suhoor
• Even if you don’t like to eat at Suhoor, try to wake up to drink some water
• Increase your fiber intake daily. Eat a plate of salad and fruits every day
• It is best to break up the Iftar meal into two parts. Part 1.Soup and salad Part 2. the main meal a little while later.
• Avoid soft drinks as they will slow down the digestion process (and cause further bloating / constipation)
• Fried foods are the main cause of heart burn
• Drink more herbal teas to aid in digestion (such as chamomile or mint tea)
• Go for a walk to help your body digest.

But not everyone is fortunate enough to get a cozy and safe home and there are places on earth where people are actually living on the edge of peril.

Here are top 10 such nightmarish places on earth where you would never want to live:



Kabwe, Zambia

The lead and cadmium accumulations in this former British colony have skyrocketed since their discovery in 1902 when Zambia was valued for a rich lead mine. Although the mines have closed and no smelters are operational now, Kabwe residents have faced the threat of lead poisoning through decades. Blood tests in the children have revealed lead concentrations exceeding 5-10 times the normal limit that could turn fatal any day. Only recently, the World Bank has allotted funds for tackling the problem.

Chernobyl, Ukraine

Talking of life-threatening pollution and poisoning, nothing could beat the nuclear reactor accident record set by Chernobyl that has left about 5.5 million people facing the threat of thyroid cancer. The fallout that occurred in April 26, 1986 has led to the leakage of nuclear radiation 100 times more pronounced in volume and effect than that of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki explosions. It is a horror that thousands of Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian children living close to the damaged plant still cannot escape the radiation impact.

Dzerzhinsk, Russia

Situated beside the Oka River in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast of Russia, Dzerzhinsk is named after the Russian leader Feliks Edmundovich Dzerzhinsky. Right From its inception, Dzerzhinsk has remained a chemical industry hub and has been producing chemical weapons for Russia. It has been labeled one of the worst polluted cities of the world with a staggering death rate.

In Dzerzhinsk, the average life of men is just 42 years and women 47 years. Environmentalists attribute such high mortality rate to the ceaseless production of organic chemicals like toxic dioxins, hydrogen cyanide, lead and sulfur mustard. The phenol and dioxin contents in the Dzerzhinsk waters surpasses the normal limit by seventeen million times.

Mogadishu, Somalia

Mogadishu, an advanced former port has been witnessing the 17-year tussle between rival military camps since the fall of the government in 1991. It turned into the most chaotic and anarchic city of the world, marked by civil unrest and insurgencies. Such disturbances caused its original inhabitants to flee, leaving Mogadishu to be controlled by military factions. Only recently, a new federal government has taken up the reins of control and is trying to re-establish law and order.

Rocinha - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The largest favela (basically meaning shanty town) in Rio De Janeiro. / Photo from -bos[s]-’Situated between the São Conrado and Gávea districts of Rio de Janeiro, Rocinha meaning small ranch in Portuguese is the largest slum or “favela” in South America. Posed on a hillside within one kilometer of the beach, Rocinha originated as a shanty to transform quickly into a modern slum neighborhood. You will find it better off than many shanties because of its brick buildings, sanitation, plumbing and other urban facilities.

What makes Rocinha a potentially dangerous place to live is the prevalence of a violent drug trade. This leads to endless tussles and encounters between the drug peddlers and the police, giving rise to a dangerous ambiance. The population of 100,000 has a poor economic state and high mortality rates. What is more, Rocinha being built on steep mountain slope is susceptible to landslides, rock falls and floods.

Kibera in Nairobi, Kenya

Kibera, meaning ‘forest’ in Nubian is the home for a million people, which earned notoriety for being the biggest slum in the whole of Africa. Most of the population here are tenants with no rights living in mud-walled shacks owned by landlords who have vacated Kibera. Most of the population is African Muslims, who huddle up eight per shack, often sleeping on the floors.

Just 20% of Kibera has electricity and no regular supply of clean water. The dam water that people use is the root to cholera and typhoid, aggravated by poor sewage condition. There is widespread menace of AIDS and the total absence of government medical facilities. What worsens the general livelihood of Kibera is the availability of a cheap alcoholic drink called ‘Changaa’.Faced with rampant unemployment, most of the slum-dwellers resort to Changaa early in life and grow into criminals, drunkards and rapists. The problem is aggravated by the availability of cheap drugs and tendencies of glue sniffing. The result is the rising rate of unwanted pregnancy among girls of all ages who invariably turn to abortion. Some charities and churches are working towards the betterment of the condition.

Dharavi in Mumbai, India

Sprawling over 175 hectares between Mahim and Sion, Dharavi has emerged as the largest slum of Asia inhabiting a population exceeding 600,000. Dharavi has its rival in Orangi Town in Karachi, Pakistan that has a notorious filth and expanse. Dharavi presents a brighter picture as a cheap pocket in the midst of expensive Mumbai where you could stay for as low as 4 US dollars rent per month.

Dharavi is an abode for various small-scale industries like pottery, embroidered garments, leather and plastic goods. Unbelievably the total net income of the residents of Dharavi amounts to almost 650 million US dollars. But Dharavi is no paradise - its inadequate water supply and toilet facilities get worse during the monsoon floods and the unhygienic environment of Dharavi poses serious threats to public health issues.

Linfen, China
Located right at the center of Shanxi Province of China’s coal region, Linfen is one of the most polluted cities in the world. The air is thick with dust and smoke to a degree that hampers visibility. The three million people who live in Linfen take regular doses of arsenic rich water, further polluted with fossil fuels and poisonous gases through the air they breathe. You can actually catch a lasting stink when you step in Linfen with overflowing sewage everywhere.

The river flowing by Linfen has its water thickened with oil. No wonder! The inhabitants using this water have high occurrences of cancer. When you look at the trees around the Linfen factories, they present a sad withered picture. It is the last place on earth that you would think of sending someone, even your worst enemy.

Bassac Apartments, Cambodia

The 300-metre-long Basaac Apartments were built due to the town planning director Lu Ban Hap’s initiative to put up a low-cost social housing project in the 1960s. However, this government-financed housing project has been the home to 2,500 refugees since 1979, when its legal tenants vacated the property because of the onset of decay. The structure made of concrete and brick has now given way to dangerous gaps in between the reinforced concrete walls marked by the ingrowths of parasitic plants. The building can collapse any time burying alive its 2500 residents.

Cubatão - São Paulo, Brazil

The city of Cubatão extending over 142 square kilometers is more appropriately known as the ‘Valley of Death’ for its precarious living conditions. It has a high air pollution level that has led to the destruction of forests over the surrounding hills and birth of children with congenital organ defects.

The life threatening pollution took a new dimension in 1984 when an event of oil spill burnt down the town, killing almost 200 people. Only recently extensive steps worth $1.2 billion are being taken to improve the damages caused by organic pollutants. Despite such measures, it is quite impossible to clean the soil and underground water from the spreading tentacles of pollution thus making Cubatão unfit for staying.
